Year Two went on an excursion to the beautiful Botanic Gardens last week. We explored the amazing gardens, used nets to find minibeasts in the pond, dug for minibeasts in soil and looked under logs.
Minibeasts are small animals without backbones, known as invertebrates. They normally live outside in places that are warm and moist (wet), such as between leaves, in soil, in rotting logs and on the sides of trees. Minibeasts include snails, spiders, butterflies, centipedes, ladybugs, leaf insects, ants, dragonflies, worms, grasshoppers and much more!
Last Thursday, we were lucky enough to meet Dr van den Berg, a spider expert! She taught us all about spiders and where they like to live. Dr van den Berg’s presentation included lots of interesting photos of spiders, their habitats and a video of a peacock spider. She even brought in spiders, such as jumping and flat rock spiders, in containers for us to look at!
